In our Reception class, children follow a programme designed to help them achieve what is known as the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ (EYFS). This provides a firm foundation for National Curriculum work in Year 1.
More information about the EYFS can be found in our Torwood Parents Guide to EYFS.
Our bright airy classrooms have been divided into the seven areas of learning with areas for cooking, role play, creative play and quiet times. We give equal importance to the outdoor as well as the indoor environment and have a fantastic outdoor classroom in which we frequently read with and to the children. This, combined with our new canopies allow us to make use of the outdoor space whatever the weather!
Learning through Play – play is the start of self-directed learning and by engaging in play, children learn about the world around them; learn how to plan and solve problems; and gain skills to practise. In our Physical Development classes children are encouraged to experience a variety of physical activities and sports; from Forest School as well as swimming every week from the Spring term onwards. The children also embrace morning exercise namely our daily dance called wake and shake’! We believe that children derive immense benefit from Expressive Arts and we embrace this throughout activity planning, helping children to develop key social skills such as concentration, co-operation and confidence.
