Brain Gym exercises and aerobics are just some of the curriculum highlights for children in Key Stage 1 at Torwood Independent Preparatory School. We have three creative activity afternoons each week that include exciting and stimulating activities such as cheerleading, photography, Spanish, and cycling throughout Redland, and the Bristol Downs.
Every child is heard reading every day, English and Mathematics are taught every morning, and exciting activities introducing children to Science and Scientific Enquiry run for a whole afternoon.
The aim of the English curriculum is to develop every child’s ability to communicate effectively in speech, and in written form and to listen with understanding. This develops each child’s lifelong skill in enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable reading.
Developing mathematical understanding provides children with one of the most fundamental tools for making sense of the world in which we live. Our teaching in Mathematics develops thinking and reasoning skills. Children work with numbers, shapes, space, and data handling; and we encourage them to use mental arithmetic by using and applying maths in daily situations.
At Torwood Independent School the starting point for our scientific explorations at Key Stage 1 is the children’s own experiences. With regular outings throughout Bristol, coupled with excellent Science resources in every classroom, Children look at:
- experimental and investigative science
- life processes and living things
- materials and their properties
- physical processes
Throughout our extensive school curriculum, children are also taught:
- Design and Technology
- Information Communication Technology — working modern suite of networked PCs, laptops and interactive whiteboards
- Music and Expressive Arts
- Physical Development
- Religious Education
- Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship
